Investing in Solar-Powered Desalination: Why ACS Is Moving from Engineering to Deployment
Water security is becoming an infrastructure investment priority. In 2024, 2.2 billion people lacked safely managed drinking water.
Desalination already helps meet demand in water-stressed regions, but expanding it brings a second challenge: energy use. The International Energy Agency reports that global energy demand for desalination has nearly doubled since 2010.
For investors, the question is increasingly practical: how can new water supplies be developed with a more sustainable energy model?
Aqua Clear Solutions (ACS) is developing modular, solar-driven desalination infrastructure to address that question. Its proposed system combines concentrated solar energy, desalination units and energy recovery. The aim is to produce freshwater through a model that can be tested at one site and, if successful, adapted for other water-stressed markets.
The immediate investment focus is Cyprus. ACS is raising Stage 1 strategic capital to develop and deploy its first operational infrastructure site there. The installation is intended to demonstrate water production and system performance under real Mediterranean conditions, within a European regulatory framework. This is the stage at which engineering plans must prove themselves in operation.
The wider industry context is substantial. The IEA estimates that the Middle East and North Africa produce 12 billion cubic metres of desalinated water each year, with around two-thirds used for drinking water. It also notes growing desalination uses in agriculture, industry and island communities. These figures show the breadth of demand; they are not a forecast of ACS sales or investment returns.
ACS’s investment case therefore rests on a clear sequence: fund the Cyprus deployment, measure its technical and commercial performance, and use the results to assess further projects. The company describes a later Aqua Eureka Coin initiative as part of its planned international funding model, but the present Stage 1 opportunity centres on the physical pilot.
