Yet behind the headlines surrounding computing power, semiconductor innovation and cloud infrastructure lies a challenge that receives far less attention: water.
As governments and technology companies race to build the next generation of AI infrastructure, ensuring secure, sustainable water supplies is becoming just as important as securing renewable electricity. In my view, this presents one of the most significant emerging opportunities for the desalination sector over the next decade.
The Water Behind Every AI Query
Every data centre generates significant heat, requiring extensive cooling systems to maintain operational efficiency. While technologies continue to evolve, water remains one of the most effective cooling mediums available.
According to estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA), global electricity demand from data centres could more than double by 2030, driven primarily by AI workloads. As computational demand increases, so too does water consumption for cooling and associated infrastructure.
Research from the University of California suggests that a single AI-generated response can indirectly consume several hundred millilitres of water depending on where and how the computing workload is processed. Whilst this figure varies considerably by infrastructure and cooling method, the overall trend is undeniable: AI has a growing water footprint.
Meanwhile, many of the world's newest hyperscale data centres are being constructed in coastal regions where land availability, subsea connectivity and renewable energy resources are strongest—but where freshwater resources are often under increasing pressure.
A Global Infrastructure Challenge
The world's data centre market is expected to exceed US$600 billion by the early 2030s, with billions of dollars of investment already committed across North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
At the same time, the United Nations estimates that nearly half of the global population experiences severe water scarcity for at least part of the year, while climate change continues to place increasing stress on traditional freshwater supplies.
These two megatrends are converging.
Technology companies are no longer simply searching for available land and reliable power grids. Increasingly, they must also consider long-term water resilience, environmental sustainability and community acceptance.

For coastal developments, desalination offers an increasingly attractive solution.
